The E3 from Olympus

The Olympus E3 was launched in November 2007 and really started selling in 2008. At the time it was launched with a number of unique functions and it was generally excepted as a robust and technically advanced camera.

At the time of writing this article the E3 is still selling as the pro grade SLR solution from Olympus. Many photographers are waiting for the expected new pro grade camera from Olympus and others continue to enjoy it as they did from the first day on.

I own one of these great cameras and will most probably continue to use it for the unforeseeable future.

Advanced Camera of the year 2008 - 2009

The EISA jury was not left wanting for arguments to justify conferring the best “European Advanced Camera 2008-2009” Award on the Olympus E-3. They were clearly enthused about the Olympus flagship D-SLR: “It provides very effective image stabilisation, dust removal and a Live View function on the articulated LCD screen, but most importantly, its image quality and ease of use are very impressive”, said EISA, who also praised the camera’s robust build and splashproof qualities. The jury summed up by saying: “The Olympus E-3 is perfectly suited for professional demands”.

EISA (European Imaging & Sound Association) is comprised of around 50 prominent magazines in the areas of audio, video, home theatre, mobile electronics and photography from 20 European countries. Each year it honours the best newly-released products in recognition of their features, quality and general appeal to users.

The E3 walked away with many highly recommended and similar awards during its life time. Both in the English press as in the German press it was regarded as a class leading product.

What is it that makes a camera a great product?

I think most important is reliability, good performance and delivering what it promised. Its important in a fast developing market segment to stay clear on what you want and not to get influenced by what’s happening in the market in general. I know that these are tough words and that often its easier said than done.

The E3 is a 10MP SLR camera that is technically one of the best ever 10MP SLR cameras. It has a very advanced microprocessor configuration that was specifically chosen, designed and implemented to enable the Olympus engineers to accommodate years of photographic experience into a high performance SLR package. There are many other unique and advanced features build into the E3 and as one discover them, new opportunities comes to mind. Personally I continue to enjoy discovering the E3 and to date the results has been 100% what I expected and required. I realize that its not the only well designed and build pro level SLR and I think its good.

I will do my best to share my experience on these pages as I learn more.
