Time Lapse Photography

Introduction

Time lapse photography was something new to me when I saw it the first time. One of our readers wrote a interesting article on astro- photography and at first I thought its the same thing. You will find said article on the next page. Astro photography and the way it is described in said article requires a normal camera with a time lapse function or timer build in. The G7 manual says it has this function, but when you try to find it, you realize there is no such function. I am lucky to own an older G5 and that still has the proper time lapse timer build in. The picture I included is misleading as it is not a time lapse application but rather a good example of astro photography.

To see more about this application I would advice you to do a search on You Tube using the word “time lapse photography” What you should see is short movie type results of subjects like busy intersections at night, a flower growing rapidly and many more.

Time lapse photography consist of a specific scene that has been photographed over a period of a hour or more with intervals of anything as low as each 5 seconds. These pictures are then transferred into a special software application that will convert it into a movie like end result.

What basically happens is the camera takes a picture every 20 or 30 seconds of the same picture. The resulting 50 or 100 pictures are combined to get this result.

Video based time lapse.

While back, somebody I know bought his son a Ixus 950 IS or something and the youngster asked me where he could find this function. Being the expert, reading Mikael’s articles I took the new Ixus.....but could not find the function. Later he called me, took me to his room where his PC is standing and there I was totally amazed at what I saw.

Similar to the technique described above, one can do it in video mode also. Do yourself a favor and type into your search bar, video time lapse and go and have a look, it looks like great fun....
